Dallas LGBT+ Bar Assoc. Denounces Supreme Court Rulings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dallas LGBT+ Bar Assoc. Denounces Supreme Court Rulings

July 3, 2023

Dallas, Texas

Last week the Supreme Court of the United States issued a trifecta of rulings which were inconsistent with decades of legal precedent and contrary to prevailing American values of equality under the law and equity in education. The Dallas LGBT+ Bar Association condemns the majority rulings issued in Students For Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard and SFFA v. University of North Carolina, ending race-based affirmative action admissions in higher education; Biden v. Nebraska derailing student loan debt relief to over 40 million Americans, and 303 Creative v. Elenis validating discrimination specifically against LGBTQ+ individuals.

Each of these decisions will directly harm many of the most vulnerable people in our communities, and, more broadly, will place additional burdens not only on Black Americans and members of the LGBTQ+ community, but upon all marginalized and minority populations throughout our country.

The Dallas LGBT+ Bar Association remains dedicated to the intentional practice of inclusivity, diversity, and equality for all. We stand firmly in our commitment to serving our members’ whole selves and their intersectional identities. We reject the Supreme Court’s unprecedented decision to declare—for the first time in history—that certain businesses have “a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class.” We call on the members of the Dallas business and legal communities to stand up and make clear their support for all persons regardless of their race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.

The Dallas LGBT Bar Association is a professional organization made up of queer and allied attorneys, judges, law students, legal professionals that is focused on fostering a supportive community and advancing the careers of LGBTQ+ attorneys and allied professionals in North Texas.
